ON THIS DAY IN 1954, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Neighbors Save Brownsville Pair From Gas Death.”

The article focused on a couple whose neighbors saved them from a deadly gas leak.

“Police, who had been called after neighbors smelled gas in the apartment building at 425 Powell St., found Henry Harrison, 50, and his wife Ella, 35, in semi-conscious condition. The couple was rushed to Kings County Hospital where their condition was later described as fair,” the Eagle reported.

The Brooklyn-born, Pulitzer Prize- winning composer aimed to create an American music style that was both popular and artistic by incorporating American folk music and the 12-tone system into his compositions. He composed ballets, film scores and orchestral works. He died in New York in 1990.

CLAUDE MONET WAS born on this day in 1840. The French painter is credited with being the initiator and leader of the Impressionist art movement. He is best known for his landscape series, which focused on capturing the changes wrought in color by light and weather. Monet died in France in 1926.
