ON THIS DAY IN 1947, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Plans Filed for Modern Prison to Replace Old Raymond Street Jail.”

The article focused on the proposed demolition of a dilapidated, 108-year-old Brooklyn jail.

“The new building is to be on site of the Brooklyn Friends School, 110 Schermerhorn St., across the street from Kings County Courthouse. It will have a capacity of 800 prisoners, including 250 juveniles, and will be one of the most modern jails in the country,” the Eagle reported.

GEORGIA O’KEEFFE WAS born on this day in 1887. Described as one of the most important American artists of the 20th century, she is known for her desert landscapes and flower studies. She died in New Mexico in 1986.

WILLIAM HERSCHEL was born on this day in 1738. He was the most renowned astronomer of his time, discovering the planet Uranus, as well as its two moons, more than 2,000 nebulae and star clusters and Jupiter’s moons. He built a 20-foot reflecting telescope and systematically began to study the sky. Herschel became the first to observe sunspots and confirm the gaseous nature of the sun, note the movement of the solar system through space and identify the infrared range of sunlight. He died in England in 1822.

CURTIS LEMAY was born on this day in 1906. He was a WWII hero whose bombing strategies for the U.S. helped pushed the Axis powers towards surrender. He later oversaw the Berlin airlift in 1948 and headed the U.S. Strategic Air Command. In 1968, he ran as the vice presidential candidate in the American Independent Party headed by George Wallace. He LeMay died in California in 1990.
