For the third year in a row, members of a Bay Ridge charity group will take time away from their families on Thanksgiving to deliver delicious hot meals to homebound senior citizens and lonely disabled people in their community.

Bay Ridge Cares, an organization co-founded by Justin Brannan, will be bringing Thanksgiving meals to shut-ins all day on Nov. 24.

“It’s easily one of the most important and rewarding things we get to do all year. For us, it’s not about simply delivering a hot meal, it’s about offering a little bit of warmth and companionship on a day when some folks don’t have a big long table with friends and family to celebrate around,” Brannan told the Brooklyn Eagle.

Last year, volunteers from Bay Ridge Cares delivered dozens of meals to the elderly and handicapped. Councilmember Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) was among the volunteers spending time with shut-ins.

“I think as we approach the holiday season, we all become more aware and introspective. We are grateful for what we have and we know how lucky we are to have our friends, our family and our health and we know not everyone is as fortunate and many of our neighbors will spend their holidays alone,” Brannan told the Eagle.

Bay Ridge Cares, formed by Brannan and a group of his friends a few years ago, prepared and delivered hot meals to homeowners and recovery workers in neighborhoods devastated by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. “We made and delivered 26,000 meals in the months after Sandy,” he said.

The group has also raised funds for families of children with cancer to help pay for treatments.

Brannan said his group is looking for suggestions from residents as to where to delivery turkey dinners on the big day.

Residents can offer suggestions by emailing [email protected].
