ON THIS DAY IN 1954, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “A Real Cop Who Did His Job at Grievous Cost is Honored.”

The article focused on Joseph Borsellino, a Flatbush police officer who almost lost use of both of his legs while apprehending two thieves.

“A few speeches were made and Borsellino, father of two youngsters, was presented with the Association’s citation for ‘unremitting and valiant efforts to apprehend criminals, to maintain law and order and for unselfish and faithful devotion to duty,’” the Eagle reported.

TODAY IS FIBONACCI DAY. This day celebrates the Fibonacci sequence in mathematics: a string of numbers where each number is the sum of the preceding pair of numbers. This sequence was named after Medieval Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci who described these numbers in his 1202 treatise “Liber abaci.”

EMMETT LITTLETON ASHFORD WAS BORN on this day in 1914. He was the first black person to officiate at a major league baseball game. He was noted for his flamboyant style when calling strikes and outs as well as for his dapper dress, which included cufflinks with his uniform. He died in California in 1980.

“DOCTOR WHO” PREMIERED ON THIS DAY in 1963. The first episode premiered on British TV with William Hartnell as the first Doctor. Traveling through time and space, the Doctor and his companions found themselves in mortal combat with alien races. The series aired until 1989 and a new version of the series began in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor.

HARPO MARX was born on this day in 1888. The New York-born comedian was popular on stage, screen and radio as part of the Marx Brothers team. Harpo, the silent brother, wore a red curly wig and communicated by honking a taxi horn at inappropriate moments. He was a self-taught and expert player of the harp. He died in Hollywood in 1964.
