ON THIS DAY IN 1886, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Workingmen Advised to Unite in Politics.”

The article focused on a meeting held on Eckford Street to encourage the Labor Party to come together and participate in the political process.

“The laboring men of no country had the opportunity that those in this country had for bettering their condition. The question was that, knowing they had this opportunity, why did they dally?” the Eagle reported.

CHARLES THOMSON WAS BORN on this day in 1729. He was America’s first official record keeper and was chosen as secretary of the First Continental Congress in 1774. He recorded proceedings for 15 years and delivered his journals together with tens of thousands of records to the federal government in 1789. It was Thomson who notified George Washington of his election as president. He died in Ireland in 1824.

LOUISA MAY ALCOTT WAS BORN on this day in 1832. The American author is best known for her novel “Little Women,” which follows four sisters on their path from childhood to womanhood. She died in 1888 in Massachusetts.

NELLIE TAYLOE ROSS WAS BORN on this day in 1876. She became the first female governor in the U.S. when she was chosen to serve out the last month and two days of her husband’s term as governor of Wyoming after he died in office. She was elected in her own right in the 1924 election but lost the 1927 race. Ross was appointed vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 1926 and named director of the U.S. Mint by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933. She died in Washington, D.C. in 1977.

THE BROOKLYN HISTORICAL SOCIETY WILL HOST “Old Myths: Confronting Aging and Ageism” tonight at 6:30 p.m. The panel will focus on aging baby boomers and traditional misconceptions about old age.
