The Brooklyn Brandeis Society co-sponsors the event, this Saturday, Nov. 5 at noon. It will take place at Congregation Mount Sinai following Sabbath worship.

Kristallnacht commemorates one of the most violent actions against Jews. Overnight on Nov. 9-10, 1938, the Nazis staged vicious pogroms — state-sanctioned, anti-Jewish riots — against the Jewish communities of Germany and Austria. These came to be known as Kristallnacht (now commonly translated as “Night of Broken Glass”), a reference to the untold numbers of broken windows of synagogues, Jewish-owned stores, community centers, and homes plundered and destroyed during the pogroms.

However, there were Germans during that time who worked to protect and bring justice on behalf of the Jews. Among them was the late German prosecutor Fritz Bauer, who was involved in the capture of Adolf Eichmann, the Gestapo agent responsible for the deportations of countless Jews from Germany, and for other war crimes.

Consul General Wagener will speak about Bauer, who worked tirelessly to obtain justice and compensation for victims of the Nazi regime. Bauer’s life and courage was recently featured in the film, “The People vs. Fritz Bauer.”

This program marks Congregation Mount Sinai’s annual observance of Kristallnacht. Consul General Wagener’s address begins at noon, following the conclusion of services. A kiddush luncheon follows. Congregation Mount Sinai is at 250 Cadman Plaza West.

Futures in Education Dinner Raises $2.4M for Inner-City Kids

The Catholic Foundation for Brooklyn & Queens-Futures in Education last week raised a record-breaking $2.4 million to be applied towards scholarships. These will be awarded to financially disadvantaged students attending Catholic grammar schools and academies in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens.

More than 1,000 guests attended the recent Futures in Education Annual Scholarship Fund Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria New York.

Gina Argento, president of Broadway Stages; Guy Chiarello, president of First Data Corporation; and Peter Ward, president of the New York Hotel & Motel Trades Council, AFL-CIO, were honored for their dedication to transforming the lives of children within the diocese. Rosanna Scotto, co-host of Good Day New York, served as mistress of ceremonies.

Student choirs from several Brooklyn parishes, including Our Lady of Trust Catholic Academy in Canarsie and St. Bernard Catholic Academy in Mill Basin/Bergen Beach, joined the New York Tenors in performing the national anthem and other numbers.

The proceeds from this annual event help families in financial need by enabling them to send their children to a Catholic grammar school or academy of their choice within the diocese. Last year, more than $7 million in scholarships was granted to nearly 5,000 families. Since its inception, Futures in Education has awarded $86 million to over 26,000 students.

Nun Who Won Italy’s ‘The Voice’ Sings at Lincoln Center Benefit

A singing nun who rose to fame on Italy’s 2014 season of “The Voice” is coming to New York City to perform and help raise money for Catholic education.

In her first appearance on stage in the United States, Ursuline Sister Cristina Scuccia will sing as a special guest, joining the New York Tenors, at the Spirit of Christmas Concert. This annual fundraiser event for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn & Queens’ Futures in Education Program will take place on Monday, December 12, at 8 p.m. at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall.

The mission of Futures in Education is to ensure that the gift of an excellent Catholic education continues to be a viable option for current and future generations of deserving students in Brooklyn and Queens. The Futures in Education program assists the neediest of those students, through endowment funds and fundraising programs that focus on key educational priorities.
