The Colonial Club of Bay Ridge strives to offer insightful and engaging talks about community events and issues that pertain to its devoted membership. The club is comprised of community leaders and professionals, including bankers, doctors, realtors and insurance agents, among others. The meetings also serve to inform members of upcoming neighborhood events.

At last Thursday’s meeting, club member Louis J. Peters of AMP Insurance Brokerage on 7709 Fifth Ave. gave a well-received talk about United Health Care Medicare solutions and the various plans available to enrollees. Peters discussed the 2017 Medicare plans in detail, as well as the various changes to the prescription drug plans.

Peters detailed the benefits of New York’s Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) Program, which helps seniors aged 65 and older to supplement their out-of-pocket Medicare Part D drug plan costs. He encouraged those eligible to seek out the various plans that would help keep their coverage cost down.

He spoke about the difference between generic and brand-name drugs, and how the patient’s primary care physician can help determined the specific drugs required for a patient.

Peters said he was very proud to represent United Health Care, which has a solid 3 1/2-star rating. Peters said that “this was very, very good considering we have more enrollments across this country than any other insurance company for Medicare advantage.” He added, “United Health Care is No. 6 on the Fortune 100, and we are very, very stable.”

The Colonial Club holds its bi-monthly meetings at Gino’s restaurant at 7414 Fifth Ave. in Bay Ridge.
