ON THIS DAY IN 1925, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Bus Conductor Returns $10,650 Gems, Gets $500.”

The article focused on Manhattan bus driver John Andrew Fuery, who returned a bag of lost gems worth $10,000 and was given a check for $500 in return by the jewels’ owner for his honesty.

“Thursday Fuery went through the bus after the trip downtown and found a bag on one of the seats. Inside were rings and a wrist watch, and $10,000 worth of jewelry. Fuery went to the lost and found bureau of the company and turned in the find,” the Eagle reported.

ROOSEVELT WAS ELECTED to his fourth term on this day in 1944. After defeating Thomas Dewey, Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first and only person elected to four terms as president of the U.S. Roosevelt was inaugurated the following January but died in office in 1945, serving only 53 days of his fourth term.

L. DOUGLAS WILDER was elected governor of Virginia in 1989, making him the first elected black governor in U.S. history. Wilder had previously served as lieutenant governor of Virginia, becoming the first black elected to statewide office in the South since Reconstruction.
