ON THIS DAY IN 1916, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Bay Ridge Arsonist Confesses 14’Jobs.’”

The article focused on Thomas Gargan, a 37-year-old cook who drunkenly set more than a dozen fires around the neighborhood.

“Gargan, booked on Arson charges at 7 a.m., admitted setting six fires on Sept. 27 and seven more on Oct. 18. Since then, special details have been assigned to patrol the Bay Ridge area,” the Eagle reported.
