When students at a Bay Ridge Catholic school heard about the path of destruction Hurricane Matthew spread across Haiti in October, they decided to do something to help the victims.

Members of the student government at St. Anselm Catholic Academy organized a collection drive to benefit the victims of Hurricane Matthew.

The Category 4 hurricane killed hundreds of people in Haiti when it hit in early October.

Students at St. Anselm Catholic Academy invited parents, teachers and the surrounding community to donate toiletries, feminine hygiene products, blankets, aqua tabs for water purification, clothing and new undergarments to the relief effort.

The kids worked on the relief plan with James McKeon, the academy’s principal.

The result was astounding, according to officials, who said local residents brought clothing and supplies to the academy at 365 83rd St. for the relief effort. The students packed the donations into boxes. The donated items were taken by volunteers to a central collection site on Nov. 2 to be shipped to Haiti at a later date.

John Quaglione, chairman of the academy’s Board of Directors, said the relief effort was a resounding success.

“I am so proud and grateful to the students and families of St. Anselm Catholic Academy who have stepped up to the plate to help those in Haiti affected by Hurricane Matthew,” Quaglione said. “Learning in the classroom and beyond is essential to our student development as we prepare them to be the leaders of tomorrow.”
