ON THIS DAY IN 1934, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Mother’s Plea Saves Boy, 18, From Prison.”

The article focused on a Brooklyn boy who avoided prison after his mother testified that he didn’t deserve jail time.

“Mrs. Caroline Peterson of 74 Buffalo Ave. went before the magistrate yesterday and pleaded that her 18-year-old son, Joe, held as one of the joyriders who stole a car and tried to drain the gasoline out of it, was a good boy led astray by bad companions,” the Eagle reported.

THE BERLIN WALL WAS opened on this day in 1989. Citizens of both sides walked freely through an opening in the barrier as others danced atop the structure to celebrate the end of the Cold War era. The 27.9-mile-long wall was built on Aug 13, 1961 after U.S. President John F. Kennedy had ordered a troop buildup in response to the blockade of West Berlin by the Soviets.

CARL SAGAN was born on this day in 1934. The Brooklyn-born astronomer and astrophysicist helped popularize science on TV with the award-winning 13-part PBS TV series, “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage,” which he narrated and co-wrote. He died in Seattle in 1996.

THE VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL Statue was unveiled on this day in 1984. The memorial includes the statue Three Servicemen, which was sculpted by Frederick Hart and a black granite wall designed by artist Maya Lin. The massive wall is inscribed with the names of more than 58,000 Americans who were killed or missing in action in the Vietnam War.

THE LINKS, INC. WAS founded on this day in 1946. Margaret Roselle Hawkins and Sarah Strickland Scott founded the nonpartisan, volunteer organization in an effort to better the lives of disadvantaged African Americans after WWII. The Links promotes educational, cultural, and community activities through a variety of projected domestically and in Africa. In May 1985, The Links became an official nongovernmental organization of the U.N.
