It has been a busy holiday season for students and teachers at Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn, including a recent trip to the Rockaways to help the organizer of a charity event set up a replica of the North Pole.

Students and staff from Adelphi spent an afternoon at the Neponsit Beach, Queens home of lawyer Joseph Mure Jr. to set up his Little North Pole event, a family-oriented happening that took place on Dec. 4. The annual holiday extravaganza is held to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and features musical performances and appearances by celebrities.

As part of the setup process, Adelphi volunteers unloaded hundreds of life-size decorations and assisted in placing them around Mure’s property. Adelphi Art Instructor Nikki Fregara also led art students in designing, building and hand-painting giant larger-than-life dreidels.

“Joe is a proud supporter of the academy and a wonderful example to our students of what dedication, community and charity truly means,” said Director of Academy Operations Albert C. Corhan.

Adelphi students also donated hundreds of canned goods to the Salvation Army Bay Ridge Corps during the academy’s Holiday Food Drive.  Head of School Iphigenia Romanos welcomed Lt. Joel Ashcraft to the academy and presented him with boxes of food items that had been donated by students and staff.

“The Annual Holiday Food Drive is always a special initiative at Adelphi,” Romanos said.  “Students donate food items at various intervals throughout the drive and the result is an overflowing supply of much-needed items that are used to directly benefit those in need in time for the holidays.”

Following the food drive, students have been donating toys to benefit needy families as part of the Holiday Toy Drive. Donations will be accepted through Dec. 15.

Also underway is the Special Trees for Special Needs Holiday Tree Drive. Supporters are asked to sponsor a holiday tree that will be on display on the academy’s grounds at 8515 Ridge Blvd. in Bay Ridge through Jan. 9.

Adelphi Academy will hold its annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m.  The event will include a musical performance from students and faculty, hot chocolate and holiday cookies and custom-made ornaments.
