With less than a year to go until election time, the Brooklyn District Attorney race is starting to heat up, with a number of candidates declaring that they’ll run for the position.

Anyone who decides to run will go up against Acting District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, who has already announced intentions to run in 2017. Gonzalez, who will run on the legacy of the late DA Ken Thompson, got a big endorsement from Thompson’s widow, Lu-Shawn Benbow-Thompson.

“There are a lot of people who have announced and will be announcing that they’re running for the open Brooklyn DA seat,” Benbow-Thompson wrote on her Facebook page. “Let me be very clear. I am supporting, endorsing and will stand by Eric Gonzalez. That was who my husband had as his second-in-command, and Eric is who Ken hand-picked to run the Office in his absence. He is the ONLY [emphasis hers] person who can carry on his legacy because he helped make it possible. NO ONE else. PERIOD.”

The Democratic primary for the election will take place in September 2017, and already the field is getting full.

Patricia Gatling, former first deputy DA under Charles Hynes, announced her candidacy earlier in December. Anne Swern, another first deputy under Hynes, is expected to run, as is Borough President Eric Adams’ Special Counsel Ama Dwimoh. Justice ShawnDya Simpson told the Brooklyn Eagle that she is considering a run, and immediate past president of the Brooklyn Bar Association Arthur Aidala didn’t rule out the possibility.
