Women should not let a lack of money stand in the way of a potentially lifesaving medical test, said state Sen. Marty Golden, who announced that he is working in partnership with the American-Italian Cancer Foundation to provide free digital mammograms and clinical breast exams in his Senate district.

The tests will be conducted at two locations on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

The foundation’s Mobile Care Clinic van will be parked outside Golden’s district office at 3604 Quentin Road in Marine Park from 9 a.m. to noon and then outside his district office at 7408 Fifth Ave. in Bay Ridge from 2 p.m. to 4: 30 p.m.

Women over the age of 40 who are New York City residents and who have not had a mammogram in the past year are eligible to be seen by the medical professionals.

Call the foundation at 1-877-628-9090 or 718-282-7614 to make an appointment for the free mammogram and breast exam.

“I am proud to partner with the American-Italian Cancer Foundation to make available free mammography screenings and bring public awareness to the importance of getting tested,” Golden said in a statement. “All women are at risk of breast cancer and research shows that early
detection of breast cancer saves lives. I encourage all those who have not had a mammogram in more than a year to make an appointment and get checked.”

The American-Italian Cancer Foundation was organized in 1980 by medical professionals, social service providers and business leaders from the U.S. and Italy, according to the organization’s website, amerianitaliancnacer.org.

In 1987, the foundation launched its mobile van service to provide free breast cancer screenings.

Under the pilot program, 425 women were screened over a 22-day period in July of 1987.

Today, more than 4,500 women a year receive free mammograms and exams through the mobile van program.

For more information on the Dec. 7 screenings, call Golden’s Bay Ridge office at 718-238-6044.
