Six CLE lectures scheduled by Brooklyn Bar Association for 2017

The Brooklyn Bar Association (BBA) announced that it has scheduled six Continuing Legal Education seminars so far for the year 2017 starting with “Branding for Lawyers” on Monday Jan. 9.

“Branding For Lawyers: Using Low-Tech and High-Tech Ways to Boost Law Firm or Individual Marketing Skills Sets for Business and Career Development Opportunities” will be hosted by Richard A. Klass on Jan. 9. It will also feature David B. Sarnoff, Warren H. Cohn and Juda Engelmayer as presenters. It is the only Continuing Legal Education (CLE) lecture scheduled that won’t be worth CLE credits, but it will be an essential course for attorneys looking to distinguish their businesses.

Also in January will be an CLE on video evidence, “Video Evidence: Legal Standards and Practical Considerations,” which will be presented by Carmen Jack Giordano and will take place on Jan. 18. On Feb. 15 there will be a CLE titled, “Mechanics Liens in Real Estate Transactions.”

There are three CLEs scheduled for March including the 2017 CPLR Update on March 15. Last year’s Civil Practice Law and Rules (CPLR) update was run by the Academy of Trial Lawyers and distinguished Brooklyn Law School professor Richard T. Farrell. David Fultz will be among this year’s presenters.

The LGBT Committee and the Family Law Committee will host a CLE on March 22 called “De Facto Parentage, the Marital Presumption and the Second Parent Adoption.” Christina Golkin is the chair of the LGBT Committee and Aimee Richter and RoseAnn C. Branda are co-chairs of the Family Law Committee. Finally, on March 29 there will be a Family Law CLE, “Child Custody: Special Issues and Case Updates,” starring Steve Cohn and David Chidekel.

VOLUNTEER LAWYERS PROJECT CLEs

The Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) also has a pair of CLEs schedule for 2017. It’s CLEs are held at the same time and place — 123 Remsen St. at 6:00 p.m. — as the BBA CLEs.

Its first scheduled CLE will take place on Jan. 10 and it will be titled, “Article 17A: Guardianship of Intellectually and Developmentally Disabled Persons.” Sidney Cherubin, director of Legal Services at the VLP, will host that lecture with topics including guardianship of intellectually and developmentally disabled persons, health care decisions, discussion of alternatives to guardianship, and many other issues that fall under the umbrella of Article 17A.

The VLP also has a CLE scheduled for Jan. 25 titled “The Basics of Uncontested Divorce.” Cherubin will be joined by Charles Coleman, a professor at CUNY Law School, and Joanne Reece, the Family Law staff attorney at the VLP. That group will cover court procedures, preparation, jurisdiction, the pitfalls of uncontested divorces and other topics.

The VLP CLEs are free to those who accept at least one pro bono 17A Guardianship matter or one pro bono uncontested divorce, respectively, before July.
