ON THIS DAY IN 1938, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Crashed Frazier Debut, Says Bensonhurst Girl.”

The article focused on socialite Brenda Frazier’s $50,000 ball at the Ritz Carlton and Brooklyn College student Edythe Friedman who crashed the party.

“Failing the invitation, she got a press card from the Brooklyn College Vanguard, put on her best black suede pumps and plaid taffeta old-fashioned evening dress at the home of a friend and trotted over to the Ritz at 9:30 p.m.,” the Eagle reported.

SIMON GUGGENHEIM WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1867. The American capitalist and philanthropist established — in memory of his son — the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1925. He died in New York in 1941.

RUDYARD KIPLING WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1865. He was a poet, novelist and short story writer and Nobel Prize laureate. After working as a journalist in India, he traveled around the world. Kipling is best known for his children’s stories, such as “The Jungle Book” and “Just So Stories,” and poems such as “The Ballad of East and West” and “If.” He died in London in 1936.

GRIGORI YEFIMOVICH RASPUTIN WAS ASSASSINATED ON THIS DAY IN 1916. In St. Petersburg, Russia, assassins related to the Romanov family killed Rasputin, the peasant mystic who was a trusted adviser to the imperial couple. He was born in Siberia in 1869.

THE MONITOR SANK ON THIS DAY IN 1862. The Union ironclad ship USS Monitor (which achieved fame after its battle with the Virginia) sank off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina during a storm. Sixteen of its crew were lost.

DAVY JONES WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1945. Well known as a member of 1960s pop group The Monkees, Jones had his first big break as the Artful Dodger in a London production of “Oliver!” He and his bandmates starred in “The Monkees” (1966-1971), a successful TV series whose ubiquity allowed for numerous band reunions and nostalgia tours that kept Jones in the public eye until his death from a heart attack in 2012 in Florida.s
