The article focused on Betty Russo and the couple she saved from a gas leak.

“Mrs. Russo came dashing to the scene, saw Mr. Anello sprawled on the threshold, and smelled gas. Without a moment’s hesitation she dashed into the apartment, turned off the gas, threw open the windows and called the police,’” the Eagle reported.

TODAY IS PEARL HARBOR DAY. On this date in 1941, nearly 200 Japanese aircrafts attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, a location long considered the U.S. “Gibraltar of the Pacific.” The raid, which lasted a little more than an hour, left nearly 2,500 dead. The attack brought about immediate U.S. entry into WWII.

ELI WALLACH WAS BORN ON THIS DAY in 1915. The Brooklyn-born stage, screen and TV actor had memorable roles in such films as “The Magnificent Seven,” “How the West Was Won,” “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and “The Godfather: Part III.” In 2010, he received an honorary Academy Award. He died in New York in 2014.

APOLLO 17 WAS LAUNCHED ON THIS DAY IN 1972. The spacecraft, which was launched with a three-man crew — Eugene A. Cernan, Harrison H. Schmidt and Ronal E. Evans — who explored the moon. It was the last manned mission to the moon.
