BRIC, the leading presenter of free cultural programming in Brooklyn, announced on Wednesday that it has received 13 nominations for New York Emmy Awards. The nominations include nine for BRIC TV, the Brooklyn-focused nonprofit cable channel and digital network BRIC launched last year, and four for shows produced through BRIC’s Brooklyn Free Speech initiative. BRIC is the 12th most nominated organization, tied with WCBS and WABC. The awards ceremony will take place March 19 at the Marriott Marquis.

“BRIC is deeply honored by this recognition of our BRIC TV and Brooklyn Free Speech TV initiatives,” said Leslie Schultz, president of BRIC. “New York’s media sector produces an abundant volume of extraordinary video work, and we are so pleased that our contribution to this body of work, exclusively focused on all things Brooklyn, is increasingly recognized as being among the best.”

The New York Emmy nominations are the latest chapter in the success story of BRIC TV. From its state-of-the-art, glass-walled studio at the BRIC House arts-and-media complex in Downtown Brooklyn, BRIC TV, formerly known as Brooklyn Independent Media, won its first NY Emmy in 2012 and shares Brooklyn stories and covers issues affecting the borough with a new lineup of local and hyper-local scripted series, news and documentary programming.

“BRIC TV is being reimagined. We capture engaging and emotional stories with a mission to showcase culture and celebrate the diversity that surrounds us,” said Aziz Isham, executive producer of BRIC TV. “We launched with an ambitious and purposeful line-up and are honored to receive an NY Emmy nod.”

Anthony Riddle, director of Community Media at BRIC, said, “Public Access television supports just that — the community’s voice through media. From nonprofit partners seeking to spread their mission to young teens who have an important perspective to share, Brooklyn Free Speech is where you can find the raw and authentic voices of Brooklyn. These nominations validate the importance of free speech.”
