Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 42nd day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1916, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Neglect and Dirt Found in Visit to Friendless Home.”

The article focused on testimony given by the superintendent of the Bureau of Social Investigation of the Department of Charities about the condition of a women and children’s home in Brooklyn.

“The same ward is the admission quarantine and the hospital, while in the lavatory of this ward is also a laundry for the clothing of healthy babies,” the Eagle reported the superintendent as saying. “Even the most obvious physical needs are neglected. One child was found who had been in bed with an earache for two days without treatment.”
