Leaders of a Republican club founded by Brooklyn GOP Chairman Arnaldo Ferraro have endorsed Donald Trump for president, citing his stand against illegal immigration as a major reason for their support of the billionaire real estate mogul.

The endorsement from the leadership of the Fiorello LaGuardia Republican Organization marks the first time an establishment GOP club in Brooklyn has backed Trump, one of the most controversial presidential candidates in recent memory.

Ferraro urged New York state GOP voters, who head to the polls on April 19 for the Republican presidential primary, to look past the controversy surrounding Trump and focus instead on his message.

The club leadership was impressed by Trump’s stand on many issues, according to Ferraro.

“We all agreed that the issues supported by Mr. Trump affect our country in a very positive way. There is pride in stating that we need to protect our borders, our veterans, and working middle-class families. Strengthening our military and protecting the interest of the American people is certainly of patriotic significance,” Ferraro said.

The Fiorello LaGuardia Republican Organization’s headquarters is located at 8024 17th Ave.

The endorsement was announced a few days before Super Tuesday, March 1, when millions of Republicans and Democrats alike in 11 states were expected to vote in primaries and caucuses.

Lucretia Regina-Potter, Republican district leader of the 46th Assembly District (AD), predicted that the endorsement by the LaGuardia Club will cause other political organizations to support Trump, the front-runner to win the GOP nomination for president.

She also predicted that Trump will win over many voters in the 46th AD in the Republican Primary. “The Trump family developed and built many communities in the 46th Assembly District, where many buildings still proudly display the Trump name after 50-plus years,” she said.

Anthony Bove, Regina-Potter’s co-leader of the 46th AD, said that the primary will prove that the LaGuardia Club is “on point” by endorsing Trump. “He presents issues in a realistic form without fear of political correctness or beating around the bush like so many other candidates do,” Bove said.

The 46th AD includes Sea Gate, Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Bath Beach, Dyker Heights, Bay Ridge and Gravesend.

Trump’s candidacy has been awash in controversy since he announced in June that he was running for president.

His flame-throwing statements have included referring to undocumented Mexican immigrants entering the U.S. as rapists and drug dealers and his call for a ban on foreign-born Muslims from entering the U.S.

On Sunday, Trump appeared to waver in disavowing an endorsement from former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, telling Jake Tapper on CNN’s State of the Union that he didn’t know enough about Duke and would have to look into the matter. Two days earlier, however, he stated at a press conference that he had rejected the Duke endorsement.
