Thanks to Interfaith Medical Center’s Department of Dental Medicine, 66 elementary school students from The Weeksville School (P.S. 243) received dental screenings at a “Give Kids A Smile” event at the hospital’s Smile Brooklyn Dental Center. The event was held in conjunction with National Children’s Dental Month and the American Dental Association’s annual effort to bring free oral health care to underserved children.

“The ‘Give Kids A Smile’ event is an excellent example of Interfaith Medical Center’s commitment to addressing the health needs of the communities we serve,” said hospital President and CEO LaRay Brown. “Conducting health education, screening and early intervention services in partnership with our local schools will continue to be an important part of Interfaith’s outreach.”

“Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease, but it can be prevented though education, good nutrition and access to dental care,” said David J. Miller, DDS, FICD, FACD, FPFA, chairman of Interfaith’s Department of Dental Medicine, and president of the New York State Dental Association. “Good dental hygiene habits begin in childhood. We are very excited to get these kids off to a good start and look forward to providing comprehensive dental care to members of our community — of all ages — in our state-of-the-art, modern dental facility.”

The event began with educational videos and concluded with free dental screenings, a fluoride varnish application, demonstrations of proper oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing and rinsing, and discussions about nutrition. Each student left with an IMC gift bag and a “Give Kids A Smile” certificate.
