On March 3, venerable New York Times photographer Chester Higgins Jr. will join City Councilmember and founder of Brooklyn’s Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts Laurie Cumbo in conversation at the Brooklyn Historical Society.

Higgins will show examples of a body of work that speaks to his interest in New York’s African Diaspora, a subject about which he has produced images that range from the Caribbean Festival to African American Hebrews in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Guests will have the opportunity to view a selection of his celebrated work as he muses about his inspiration and approach to photography.

In addition to his 40-year career at the Times, Higgins has published numerous books of photography, including â€śBlack Women,” â€śElder Grace” and â€śDrums of Life,” as well as a memoir, “Echo of the Spirit.”

Higgins has held fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the International Center of Photography, the National Endowment for the Arts, The Rockefeller Foundation and more. He has been widely recognized in the press, exhibited internationally and received awards that include the Gordon Parks Legend Award and the Nubian Women’s Art Circle Award.

State Sen. Velmanette Montgomery will introduce the program.

The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. in BHS’s Othmer Library (128 Pierrepont St. in Brooklyn Heights.)
