Councilmember Mathieu Eugene, the City Council’s only physician, has done something to improve the health of Kings County Hospital, but he didn’t need a stethoscope to do it.

Eugene (D-Kensington-Prospect Lefferts Gardens) recently secured additional city funding for the hospital and presented hospital officials with a $4.9 million check.

“All New Yorkers deserve quality care and I’m pleased to be your advocate for health,” Eugene said in a statement. “It is our moral obligation to make sure that our men, women, children and senior citizens receive the care they are entitled to, and I will continue to support important health initiatives.”

Located at 451 Clarkson Ave., Kings County Hospital is a 627-bed medical facility that operates under the jurisdiction of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation.

Eugene has allocated funding for a variety of health-related projects in recent months.

In December, he celebrated the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Kings County Hospital for a Linear Accelerator (LINAC), a state-of-the-art machine that provides radiation therapy for cancer patients that destroys cancerous cells and leaves healthy tissue intact.

Eugene has also secured funding to support the State University of New York SUNY Downstate Medical Center’s Advanced Biotechnology Incubator.

In addition to allocating funds to help ensure quality care for New Yorkers, Eugene stated that he is also working on legislation to raise awareness about dangerous health ailments.

Last month, he introduced a bill to recognize the first week of every February as Heart Disease Awareness Week in New York City. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S., according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Eugene has also introduced a resolution to have the city recognize World Asthma Day on the first Tuesday of May and another resolution to declare the fourth Wednesday in May as Stroke Awareness Day in New York City.
