Three girls from Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst, who combined civic-mindedness with their writing talents and came up with bold ideas on how to keep streets and sidewalks clean, were named the big winners of an anti-littering essay contest sponsored by state Sen. Marty Golden.

Fiona Costello, who attends St. Patrick Catholic Academy in Bay Ridge; Agnes Keough, a student at Visitation Academy in Bay Ridge; and Diane Stoupakis of P.S. 186 in Bensonhurst won the finals of the “Don’t Drop It” essay contest recently held at Xaverian High School.

More than 500 students submitted essays for consideration in the contest.

The three winners were chosen by a panel of judges from among 21 contest finalists representing public, private and parochial schools in Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst. The participating schools were P.S. 102, P.S. 104, P.S. 127, P.S. 176, P.S. 185, P.S. 186, P.S. 204, P.S. 264, Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn, Holy Angels Catholic Academy, St. Patrick Catholic Academy and Visitation Academy.

The finalists read their essays aloud to the judges: Debra Barreto, deputy director of customer relations at the New York City Department of Sanitation; Josephine Beckmann, district manager of Community Board 10; and Laurie Windsor, president of the Community Education Council of District 20.

“Through this essay contest, we are increasing awareness about the harmful effects of littering,” Golden said in a statement. “Keeping our streets clean takes a team effort and these students will now encourage others to join the fight against littering.”

Golden, who called the essay contest an “overwhelming success,” said it will be expanded next year.
