Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 62nd day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1938, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “$10 License Fee for Dogs Killed by Assembly Body.”

The article focused on the state Legislature shooting down a bill that would negatively impact dog owners’ finances.

“The Brooklyn assemblyman’s proposal … brought a torrent of disapproval from owners of mutts and pedigreed beauties and from the ASPCA. Letters of protesters poured into the editorial offices of the Eagle,” the Eagle reported. “[The assemblymember] finally declared that he was a dog-lover and that he used to sleep with his dog as a boy.”
