PHOTOS: Brooklyn’s LICH still stands, but not for long
A moment in time before change comes to Cobble Hill
Boarded up windows, chains on a playground fence, netting and debris littering the ground behind construction fences are the signs of the demolition soon to come to the former Long Island College Hospital’s (LICH) 12-story Fuller Pavilion and eight-story Othmer Pavilion.
Fortis Property Group, which purchased the 20-building LICH campus in Cobble Hill for $240 million, is preparing to knock down the buildings as part of its controversial high-rise development plan.
The historic hospital’s closure was fought for years. The Cobble Hill Association and local officials are now trying to scale back Fortis’ plan, backed by Mayor Bill de Blasio, to rezone the area, which would allow much denser development in the low-rise neighborhood. (A non-rezoning option would also have tall towers, but would not be as dense.)
