The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy (Conservancy), St. Francis College and Brooklyn Bridge Park have announced the 18th Eileen C. Dugan Memorial 5K. The race, enjoyed by nearly 400 participants in 2015, will return to the Brooklyn waterfront for the fifth year on Saturday, April 16 at 9 a.m.

This 3.1-mile race remembers Eileen Dugan, a New York state assemblymember who represented the local 52nd Assembly District (Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Red Hook, Sunset Park and Bay Ridge) from 1980 to 1996. Her early advocacy to create a public park on the Brooklyn waterfront was instrumental in making Brooklyn Bridge Park a reality. In 1996, at the age of 51, Dugan passed away from breast cancer.

“It is a pleasure to welcome runners back to Brooklyn Bridge Park for the 18th Eileen C. Dugan Run this spring,” said Nancy Webster, executive director of the Conservancy. “We are honored to celebrate Eileen Dugan’s commitment to public service, knowledge of the value of government and communities working together and advocacy for the creation of a public park on the Brooklyn waterfront. The vibrant vistas and expansive piers of Brooklyn Bridge Park will provide an incredible course for runners and supporters alike.”

“Every year, we are so proud to honor the memory of Assemblymember Dugan, who did so much to make the park a reality,” said Regina Myer, president of Brooklyn Bridge Park. “This year, entrants will have even more park to run in, and for the first time can enjoy the breathtaking vistas from the end of Pier 6.”

“The Eileen C. Dugan run has really taken off since Brooklyn Bridge Park began hosting the event,” said St. Francis College President Brendan J. Dugan. “It’s the perfect fit — an example of everything my sister worked for and dreamed could be possible on the Brooklyn waterfront.”

For its first 13 years, the Eileen C. Dugan Run was a tradition on the streets of Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill. This year’s course will begin and end at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The run is limited to the first 500 entrants. All proceeds from the run will support the Conservancy’s free cultural, recreational and educational events.
