St. Anselm student wins diocese math bee

His knowledge of numbers and his coolness under pressure have won a Bay Ridge student the top prize in a big contest.

James Schmidt, a fifth-grader at St. Anselm Catholic Academy in Bay Ridge, was the Middle Grades division winner of the Brooklyn Diocesan Math Bee and got to take home a trophy.

The Math Bee, which took place at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Academy in Sunset Park on April 13, featured finalists from 18 schools throughout the diocese. The diocese includes Brooklyn and Queens.

The contest lasted 23 rounds. James was declared the winner after successfully answering a question that required adding and subtracting of integers. 

James McKeon is the principal of St. Anselm Catholic Academy. Teacher Janet Batista helped prepare students for the contest.

“On behalf of everyone at St. Anselm’s, we congratulate James on making our school so proud. We look forward to the continued expansion of our STEM program, and know that James and all of our students will continue to excel at our school,” said John Quaglione, chairman of the academy’s board of directors.
