Dear Fellow Brooklynites

I just heard devastating news. This morning, a cyclist was killed by the driver of an 18-wheel truck in Park Slope.

We don’t know the details yet, but we do know that the driver was not on a legal truck route. We know that his truck was larger than trucks are legally allowed to be inside city limits. We know one other thing too: This is what happens when City Hall does not protect cyclists and pedestrians.

I am upset and angry. I’m sure you are too. Please, take a minute to tell Mayor de Blasio that we need him to do more.

Just a few days ago, another New Yorker died — again a cyclist, again in Brooklyn. On April 15, less than a mile-and-a-half away, a woman was struck and killed by a driver in Clinton Hill, while she pedaled to work.

We should not have to risk our lives to bike to work. City Hall knows how to protect us. Statistics show that new bike lanes and aggressive enforcement against reckless driving can keep cyclists and pedestrians alive and uninjured.

Please, take a minute to tell Mayor de Blasio that we need him to do more.

Our thoughts remain with the families of the victims. Thank you for speaking up, for me, you and everyone who rides a bike in NYC.

In solidarity —

P.S. Mayor de Blasio needs to hear from you. Take a minute to tell him that New York City’s biking, walking families need him to do more.
