The Brooklyn Senior Games came to a festive end this past Saturday, closing with a celebration of senior athletes at St. John’s Recreation Center in Crown Heights that included poetry, music, dancing and lunch. Running over the course of a week, the senior games honor fitness and active living and have included the participation of nearly 200 senior athletes at recreation centers across Brooklyn. At the closing, state Sen. Jesse Hamilton and City Councilmember Robert Cornegy presented senior athletes with awards for competing in a wide range of contests, from swimming and pickleball to table tennis and track and field.

The Brooklyn Senior Games took inspiration from the Empire State Senior Games in Cortland, N.Y. A Brooklyn resident who competed in swimming, Joyce Bolden, met with Hamilton and mentioned she had won a medal. From that meeting in the fall of 2015, Hamilton launched a partnership with NYC Parks and colleagues Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, state Sen. Kevin Parker and Cornegy to build a similar event in Brooklyn.
