Emory University scholar speaks on intersection of law and faith
Congregation Mount Sinai, which has a long history of programs on the Torah, Talmud and other aspects of Jewish law, will present a talk with the Brooklyn Brandeis Society next Monday.
Law Professor Michael J. Broyde of Emory University will speak on “Jewish Law Influences on the Common Law and on Modern Anglo-American Law.” His presentation will encompass the areas of arbitration, welfare, criminal, marriage and tax law.
Broyde is a fellow in Emory’s Center for the Study of Law and Religion. Previously, he was the founding rabbi of Atlanta’s Young Israel Congregation. He was the director and a dayan in the Beth Din of America. He is the author of many books and more than 100 articles on matters of Jewish law, the intersection of religion and law and other legal topics. Among these are “Marriage, Divorce, and the Abandoned Wife in Jewish Law: A Conceptual Understanding of the Agunah Problems in America.” [Incidentally, a Season 15 “Law and Order” episode titled “All in the Family” delved into the problems that one such New York City agunah faced.]
