Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 138th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1924, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “$100,000 Seizure of Narcotics Made in Warren St. Rain.”

The article focused on a raid at a tenement house where more than $100,000 worth of narcotics was seized.

“The police secured entrance to the apartment where the dope was contained after Detective Henry J. Addy, posing as an addict, had purchased a small paper of alleged cocaine for $2,” the Eagle reported. “… three prisoners were taken.”

BROWN V. BOARD of Education was decided on this day in 1954. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that segregation of public schools “solely on the basis of race” denied black children “equal educational opportunity” even though “physical facilities and other ‘tangible’ factors may have been equal. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.” The case was argued before the court by Thurgood Marshall, who would go on to become the first African-American appointed to the Supreme Court.
