On Saturday June 4, beginning at 12:30 p.m., Street Sounds in Bay Ridge will host its 9th annual Gretsch Day celebration. This much-anticipated Brooklyn event brings together music lovers of all ages from all parts of the city to enjoy an unforgettable concert in the heart of Bay Ridge.

Street Sounds owner Rocky Schiano has been in the music business since 1988. Located about 10 miles away from the original Gretsch factory, Street Sounds is the largest authorized Gretsch dealer in the world, and carries one of the largest inventories of Gretsch guitars anywhere. Renowned artists and musicians such as John Sebastian of the Lovin’ Spoonful, and guitar legend Duane Eddy have come to visit Rocky just to check out his vast inventory of Gretsch guitars.

This year’s celebration brings back Fred and Dinah Gretsch. Fred is the great-grandson of founder Freidrich Gretsch, who started the company in 1883 by opening a shop at 104 South 4th Street in Williamsburg. In 1916, he moved the company to a larger building that he had built at 60 Broadway in Brooklyn. Legendary musicians from Eddie Cochran to Pete Townsend have played Gretsch guitars. Chet Atkins endorsed a series of Gretsch guitars starting in 1954.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Fred Gretsch and if they were to purchase a guitar, he would gladly sign it. Concert performers include English rockabilly star Darrel Higham, Grammy nominated Nashville artist Todd “Banjo Man” Taylor, who will perform with Mike Moody on bass, and John “The Cat” Gatto, an original member of renowned Long Island band, The Good Rats. Master guitar builder Stephen Stern will also be attending.

Aside from selling musical instruments, strings and accessories, Street Sounds also offers private music lessons. Gretsch Day is a free event that’s perfect for the entire family.
