Bishop Kearney High School has a new director of alumnae relations. Catherine McCarthy Schmidt, a 1974 graduate of the Catholic school for girls, has been named to the post. School officials announced the news on May 26.

As alumnae director, McCarthy Schmidt will serve as the school’s chief ambassador to the more than 15,000 Bishop Kearney alumnae. Part of her job will entail working toward strengthening the bonds between the graduates and their alma mater through special events and proactive communications, school officials said.

McCarthy Schmidt succeeds Sister Virginia Lake, who served as director of alumnae relations for many years while simultaneously working in the school’s development office. She also taught math for many years at Bishop Kearney.

Lake will continue to serve in the development office.

“We are extremely grateful to Sister for all her work in the area of development and alumnae relations.  She has been a wonderful mentor to countless generations of Kearney women,” school officials said in a statement.

Bishop Kearney was founded by the Sisters of Saint Joseph and is located at 2202 60th St. in Bensonhurst.

Sister Elizabeth Hill, chairperson of the school’s board of trustees, said Bishop Kearney High School owes a great deal to Lake for her decades of service. “I am delighted that she will continue to be involved in the outreach to alumnae. We welcome Catherine Schmidt into her new role with great enthusiasm and confidence that she will build a dynamic and effective alumni program that will help to strengthen and enhance Kearney for years to come,” Hill said in a statement.

Lake said she is delighted to welcome McCarthy Schmidt. “Catherine and I both came to Kearney in 1970, while she was a student and I was a math teacher. I look forward to working with her for many more years,” Lake said.
