On Sunday, May 22 at 2:30 p.m., the Irwin Meyer American Legion Headquarters Band, conducted by Sean King, will perform a concert in the Parish House of the New Utrecht Reformed Church at 18th Avenue and 84th Street in Bensonhurst. The event, sponsored by the Friends of Historic New Utrecht, is free to the public.

The band has changed its full name to honor the late Irwin Meyer, the band’s conductor and music director for 37 years, who died in May 2015 at the age of 96, a month after his last concert with the band on April 26, which was also at New Utrecht. The band continues in its 88th year under the baton of Mr. King and leadership of manager Jim Buchanan. An all-volunteer group, the band’s members come from a variety of backgrounds and range in age from 14 to 85.

The May 22 concert is one in a series of free concerts and history-related events offered each year by the Friends of Historic New Utrecht.
