Maimonides Medical Center recently celebrated the opening of the new exhibit “Transformations: Seeking Clarity Through Art.” Located at the Marvin H. Lipkowitz Gallery in the Maimonides Community Mental Health Center, the exhibit features artwork created by 26 patients participating in art therapy groups from the Psychiatry Wellness Recovery Program.

“Art therapy provides patients with an outlet to express themselves,” said Kevin Maxwell, art therapist at Maimonides and curator of the exhibit. “Creating art serves as an important therapeutic step in the process toward healing and recovery.”

The opening reception for “Transformations: Seeking Clarity Through Art” included a speaking program with remarks from Ken Gibbs, president and CEO of Maimonides; Dr. Scot McAfee, chair of psychiatry; Marcel Biberfeld, senior vice president of psychiatry; Dr. David Miller, director of the Wellness Recovery Program; and Sara Gold, director of therapeutic activities.

The art exhibit highlights images that are important to patients, created with materials best suited to each individual, allowing patient artists to share their journeys with peers and the public.

Art will be on display in the Marvin H. Lipkowitz Gallery for two years. The general public is encouraged to visit; to make an appointment to view the exhibit, call 718-283-8280.
