Gentile says budget ensures 6-day library service
Book lovers can rejoice now that Mayor Bill de Blasio and the City Council have agreed on a new budget, according to Councilmember Vincent Gentile, who said the fiscal package includes $23 million for libraries.
The funding will likely ensure service six days a week at the Brooklyn Public Library and the city’s other library systems, said Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst), who is the former chairman of the council’s Committee on Libraries.
“As the former chair of the Committee on Libraries, I am extremely pleased that public libraries will have no less than $23 million per year to sustain six-day service. In addition, we will be investing more funds than ever before for the infrastructure of our library’s facilities. Our libraries are a safe haven for all ages and for learning and professional development for those in need. This budget ensures that our library’s doors will remain open Monday-Saturday for the foreseeable future while providing state of the art learning environments,” Gentile said in a statement.
