Book lovers can rejoice now that Mayor Bill de Blasio and the City Council have agreed on a new budget, according to Councilmember Vincent Gentile, who said the fiscal package includes $23 million for libraries.

The funding will likely ensure service six days a week at the Brooklyn Public Library and the city’s other library systems, said Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst), who is the former chairman of the council’s Committee on Libraries.

“As the former chair of the Committee on Libraries, I am extremely pleased that public libraries will have no less than $23 million per year to sustain six-day service. In addition, we will be investing more funds than ever before for the infrastructure of our library’s facilities. Our libraries are a safe haven for all ages and for learning and professional development for those in need. This budget ensures that our library’s doors will remain open Monday-Saturday for the foreseeable future while providing state of the art learning environments,” Gentile said in a statement.

The mayor and the council announced the budget agreement at City Hall on June 8.

Gentile, who served as an assistant district attorney in Queens before entering politics, also lauded the budget item that will distribute $22 million to the city’s five district attorneys. The funds will enable the district attorneys to be equipped with efficient resources to help stem the problem of drug and opioid abuse, Gentile said.

“As a former assistant DA, I know firsthand how vital it is to have an appropriate budget to get things done on both a criminal justice and public safety level. Whether it’s implementing drug prevention programs, acquiring valuable resources to conduct casework or hiring highly qualified staff, having sufficient funds for a DA’s operation is paramount towards successful investigations, prosecutions and borough wide safety,” Gentile stated.
