To celebrate the appointment of the first Italian-American chief judge in the state of New York, Hon. Janet DiFiore, the Columbian Lawyers Association, First Judicial Department held a yacht party aboard the Atlantis out of Pier 81 in Manhattan on Monday night.

“We are thrilled and privileged to welcome the chief judge,” said the Columbian Lawyers Association’s President Marianne Bertuna. “The Columbian Lawyers, First Department actually predicted this when we bestowed the Rapallo Award to Chief Judge Janet DiFiore in 2008. We are honored to have her here with us tonight.”

More than 200 people were aboard the Atlantis for its four-hour tour around the New York Harbor. It gave the association’s members a chance to celebrate the end of another legal season and a chance to meet and greet the 38th chief judge of the state of New York and the Court of Appeals.

Bertuna and her law partner, Hon. Barry Kamins, also presented DiFiore with a crystal award and gave a brief speech focusing on how thrilled the organization is about the appointment of an Italian American.

“It’s a delight and privilege to be able to bestow our new chief judge, the Hon. Janet DiFiore, with an award from the Columbian Lawyers Association, First Judicial Department,” Kamins said.

“I met Judge DiFiore about 15 years ago when we served on then-Chief Judge Judith Kaye’s commission on drugs in the court,” Kamins continued. “We’ve served on a number of commissions since then. Everybody knew back in those days that Janet DiFiore was a rising star, and thanks to Gov. Cuomo, her star has now taken its place as a constellation.

“Judge DiFiore is our new captain. We all salute her as she leads the judiciary to heights never seen before. Congratulations.”

DiFiore spoke briefly about her involvement with the Columbian Lawyers and explained how it has helped create lasting friendships during her legal career.

“This is such an honor for me to be here and be recognized this evening,” DiFiore said. “The Columbian Lawyers have been an integral part of my professional life since the very first year that I started in Westchester County as a practicing lawyer. Back then, in 1981, I was very lucky to be a part of the founding efforts of our Columbian Lawyers in Westchester County.

“I am so grateful to the Columbian Lawyers and the support that I have received throughout my career,” she said.
