BROOKLYN —  Police Commissioner Receives Hon. Degree: Long Island University presented an honorary degree to NYPD Commissioner William J. Bratton at the Annual LIU Gala on June 16. The event celebrated LIU’s 90th anniversary. Commissioner Bratton was honored for more than 40 years of distinguished service, leading efforts that achieved historic improvements in public safety. Held at the Plaza Hotel with nearly 250 attendees, the gala raised funds for LIU student scholarships and programs.

NORTH KOREA — Girls Play at Aquatic Center: North Korean school children spend their time in the aquatic center at the Songdowon International Children’s Camp located in Wonsan on Thursday. The camp, which has been operating for about 30 years, was intended mainly to deepen relations with friendly countries in the Communist or non-aligned world.  

PHILIPPINES — Mud Festival Takes Place: A village girl, donning capes mostly of dried banana leaves and covered in mud, attends a Mass in an annual ritual to venerate their patron saint, John the Baptist, on Friday at Bibiclat. The “Taong Putik” or “mud people” festival in Bibiclat village dates back to the Japanese occupation of the country in the 1940s.
