Sugary snacks like donuts aren’t usually allowed in classrooms, but officials in School District 20 made an exception and allowed pre-K children to indulge in the sweet treat. And their dads were welcome to join them.

It was all part of “Donuts with Dads,” a double-celebration of the Pre-K for All program in District 20.

The “Donuts with Dads” event, held earlier this month, was designed to promote parent engagement and community involvement in the district’s Pre-K for All program, according to District 20 officials, who said it was also a great way to honor dads for Father’s Day.

The district covers schools in Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and parts of Bensonhurst, Borough Park, Sunset Park and Flatbush.

The sweet treats were provided by a local Dunkin Donuts shop and families got the chance to enjoy breakfast at their child’s pre-K center.

Dads, stepdads, grandfathers and uncles were invited for reading time and donuts with their children.

“The District 20 Pre-K Centers are so grateful to Dunkin Donuts for their generous donation. This act of generosity solidifies our belief in strong family community ties. It was wonderful to see how excited our students were to have their families celebrate with them,” Assistant Principal Lauren Napolitano said in a statement.

Introduced by Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina, Universal Pre-K for All has been developed to educate New York City children in the 4-year-old preschool age group.

In District 20, Early Childhood Director Dianne Gounardes supervises eight local centers serving approximately 700 families.

District 20’s Pre-K for All had a successful year that included rigorous and age-appropriate units of study, educator collaborations and a unified vision that supported children in gaining the skills outlined in the Common Core, according to district officials.

Children born in 2012 are eligible to attend pre-K classes in September. For more information on how to register a child for pre-K, parents can visit www.schools.nyc.gov/choicesenrollment/PreK.
