Executives at the Bay Ridge Federal Credit Union said they’re not waiting for a terrorist attack or some other disaster to strike in order to prepare for emergencies.

The credit union, which despite the Bay Ridge in its name operates out of offices in Bensonhurst and Sheepshead Bay, has already started a program of preparing, planning and training for what one representative called “an unthinkable situation.”

Even before the June 28 terrorist attack at Atkturk Airport in Istanbul, Turkey, the credit union was working to prepare for the worse, in the hope that the worst will never happen in Brooklyn, according to executives.

Executive Vice President Anthony Grigos said the financial services company is doing its best to be prepared for any contingency so that it can continue to provide services to its members.

The credit union has developed procedures, installed and tested an alert system and has provided extensive training for its employees, so the workers will know what to do during and after an emergency.

“Terrorist or active situations are very frightening because they are beyond our control. However, it is within our control to acknowledge these situations can occur at our credit union and to employees, determine how we will respond to these situations and ensure our employees are trained to respond in a calm, self-assured and controlled manner, limiting the damage these situations can cause,” Grigos said in a statement.

But the credit union might be in the minority when it comes to terror preparedness.

In a commentary that appeared on www.cnbc.com on Feb. 16, Ralph de la Vega, vice chairman of AT&T, wrote that most U.S. companies are not prepared for cyber attacks. They should be prepared, he urged. “A single cyber attack can inflict millions of dollars in damage,” he wrote.

The Bay Ridge Federal Credit Union has offices at 1750 86th St. in Bensonhurst and at 1609 Avenue Z in Sheepshead Bay.

Established in 1934, the credit union is led by its longtime President Gene Brody. The credit union offers loans, mortgages, checking accounts and other financial services to its members.
