Bishop Kearney High School student Autumn Bernard has big plans for July. She has earned acceptance to the Maimonides Women in Science Program and will be spending the month working at Maimonides Medical Center.

Aimed at inspiring young women to pursue careers in medicine, the Maimonides Women in Science Program is a summer internship that provides a hands-on learning experience, according to officials at Bishop Kearney, a Catholic high school for girls at 2202 60th St. in Bensonhurst.

Maimonides Medical Center, a 711-bed acute care hospital, is located a 4802 10th Ave. in Borough Park.

The Maimonides Women in Science Program is headed by Dr. Mara S. Karamitopoulos, the pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Maimonides. Students seeking admission into the internship program must submit essays.

Once they are accepted into the program, students are paired with mentors who will guide them throughout the month.

The young women will have to develop their own research projects and will be assisting surgeons in outpatient settings. Students will also observe surgeries in the operating room and join in on resident-led orthopedic lectures and discussions.

Geo Garcia, chairperson of Bishop Kearney’s Science Department, said the entire school is excited for Bernard.

“This is a great opportunity for Autumn to take on the challenges that lie ahead in the field of science and medicine. I look forward to continuing to expand Bishop Kearney’s relationship with Maimonides with the hope that more students take advantage of their internship programs,” Garcia said in a statement.
