Hailed by The Washington Post as “one of the most visible and successful feminists of her generation,” Guardian U.S. columnist and author Jessica Valenti has written her most intimate and controversial work yet — “Sex Object: A Memoir” (Dey Street Hardcover). The book was published just this week, and Valenti will appear at BookCourt (163 Court St. in Cobble Hill) this Saturday, June 11, for a talk, Q&A and book signing at 7:30 p.m.

Feminism, once derided as the “f-word,” is at the forefront of our culture: Beyoncé performs in front of the word feminist in 40-foot lights, celebrities are calling for wage equality, campus rape has now become worthy of A1 coverage, Abbi and Ilana of “Broad City” celebrate their sexual freedom while Hillary Clinton is on the verge of becoming commander in chief.

For more than a decade, Valenti has been leading the national conversation on gender and politics, paving the way for a new generation of feminist writers. To the disdain of misogynists everywhere (the proof is in her inbox), her articles have topped the most-read lists at The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Nation and the Guardian U.S.

Now, in her darkly funny and bracing memoir, Valenti explores the toll that sexism takes on women’s lives, from the everyday to the existential. “Sex Object” explores the painful, comical, embarrassing and sometimes illegal moments that shaped her adolescence and young adulthood in New York City. Reflecting on her experiences with drugs, sex, harassment, assault, abortion, family and motherhood, Valenti reveals a more vulnerable side to the confident persona she has cultivated as one of the most recognizable feminists of her generation.
