Similar to the Democratic presidential debate in April, the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s Duggal Green House played host to thousands of outspoken Democrats on Tuesday evening.

This time, however, all of the vocal attendees were in support of the same candidate: Hillary Clinton.

What were once jeers from the debate hall two months ago turned into cheers for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as she won four out of six Democratic primaries on Tuesday.

After winning primaries in New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota and California, Clinton became the presumptive Democratic nomination after her string of triumphs pushed her delegate count to 2,768. She has 2,196 pledged delegates and 572 super delegates.

Clinton’s opponent, Sen. Bernie Sanders, won in Montana and North Dakota, but he trails Clinton by 902 delegates. He has 1,819 pledged delegates and 47 super delegates for a total of 1,866.

Candidates need 2,383 delegates to become the presumptive nominee.

Clinton started her speech by saying, “It’s wonderful to be back in Brooklyn, here in this beautiful building.” Following that statement, the crowd erupted into cheers and applause.

Clinton’s ties with Brooklyn and with New York are strong. She is a former New York senator and has her campaign headquarters in Brooklyn Heights at One Pierrepont Plaza, a mere eight-minute drive from the Duggal Greenhouse.

Clinton thanked all of her supporters for their tireless work throughout her campaign and called the victory a historic one.

“Thanks to you, we’ve reached a milestone,” Clinton said. “It’s the first time in our nation’s history that a woman will be a major party’s nominee for president of the United States.”

She called her win the latest victory in a long line of battles that started in 1848 at the Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, N.Y.

“We all owe so much to those who came before, and tonight belongs to all of you,” Clinton said.

Clinton commended Sanders on a well-fought battle and empathized with him on knowing what it feels like to lose.

“I want to congratulate Sen. Sanders on the extraordinary campaign he has run,” Clinton said. “Let there be no mistake, Sen. Sanders and his campaign … have been very good for the Democratic Party and for America.

“I know it never feels good to put your heart into a cause or a candidate you believe in and to come up short,” Clinton continued. “I know that feeling well.”

Clinton also spoke about the role her mother played in shaping her career.

“My mother believed that life is about serving others,” Clinton said. “And she taught me never to back down from a bully — which it turns out was pretty good advice.

“I wish she could see her daughter become the Democratic Party’s nominee.”
