Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 194th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1918, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “‘Mac,’ $200 Macaw, Bites a Detective.”

The article focused on a local woman’s pet macaw escaping her home and flying around Flatbush.

“‘Mac,’ who looks like a slice of rainbow with wings and a long curved beak, has lost a good deal of the wing power that used to carry him through the Amazon jungles,” the Eagle reported. “His progress was slow, so slow that by yesterday he had penetrated only to Erasmus Street, which is still in Flatbush. There he roosted and rested. And there, Willie Smith, 12 years old, who lives nearby, shinned up and caught him.”
