In recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day, Maimonides recently honored cancer survivors with a festive, Mardi Gras-themed celebration at Dyker Beach Golf Club. The festivities highlighted the milestones achieved by survivors and patients, and acknowledged the family members, friends and health care professionals who have supported them along the way.

Maimonides President and CEO Ken Gibbs gave welcoming remarks. “Our Cancer Survivors Day event is an amazing reunion of our patients who have battled and beaten cancer, and the incredible doctors who were with them every step of the way,” Gibbs said. “The hundreds of survivors here today speak to both the wonderful spirit of our patients and the excellent quality of care we provide at Maimonides.”

The Maimonides Cancer Center is the only full-service cancer center in Brooklyn, and has Brooklyn’s only fully accredited Breast Center and Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.

“There is nothing more rewarding than seeing so many patients who have successfully undergone cancer treatment at Maimonides gathered together to support one another and celebrate the gift of life,” said Dr. Patrick Borgen, chair of the department of surgery and Breast Center director. “Our Cancer Center is a true community, and it is an honor to pay tribute to our survivors and our dedicated team.”

Bridget Leggio and Yee Chin were honored as “Survivors of the Year” during a special awards ceremony presented by Maimonides Cancer Center physicians.

“It is an honor to be named a Survivor of the Year by the Maimonides Cancer Center,” said Leggio. “I had cancer three times, and was treated and supported by an entire team of specialists. Thanks to the world-class care and truly remarkable support system that Maimonides provided me, I’m here today with my family, friends and community.”

“It brings me great joy to be recognized and to celebrate this day with loved ones and fellow survivors,” said Chin. “I am extremely grateful for the support and wonderful care I received from everyone at Maimonides. Today, we all celebrate the milestones we have achieved in our battles against cancer.”

Other highlights of the celebration included arts and crafts, face-painting, a photo booth and a live band made up of Maimonides doctors and staffers.
