Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 202nd day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1922, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “10,000 Knit Goods Workers Ask More Pay; Face Lockout.”

The article focused on a plant in Ridgewood whose owners threatened to shut down operations if workers would not recede from their demands for higher wages.

“They want an addition $1 to $2 a dozen for the sweaters they make,” the Eagle reported. “It is this demand which the manufacturers refused and which was discussed today… The delegation left, with a promise of calling a mass meeting of all the knitters, at which the manufacturers’ ultimatum will be taken under consideration.”

Shortly after the movie began, Holmes propped open an emergency exit walked to his car and returned heavily armed and wearing body armor. Standing at the front of the theater, he began discharging tear gas and a variety of weapons into the panicked crowd, killing 12 and wounding 58. It was the fourth and largest of the seven mass shootings in the U.S. in 2012.
