Carrie Guan recently graduated from Bishop Kearney High School but before she left high school to move on to college, she made a detour to Washington D.C., where she won recognition for her artistic talents.

Guan was selected as a winner in the House of Representatives Artistic Discovery Congressional Art Competition, a nationwide event in which top young artists from high schools in each of the House’s 435 congressional districts in the United States compete for the chance to display their work in the U.S. Capitol. Guan was one of 23 students who entered the contest in the 11th Congressional District (Southwest Brooklyn-Staten Island), which is represented by Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan.

Her artwork, titled “Within a Girl,” depicted an eagle. “I came to America four years ago by myself,” said Guan, who emigrated from her native China. “The spirit of the eagle – the freedom, the strength and the braveness inspire me.”

Fresh from the Washington D.C. exhibition, her artwork will be on display in Donovan’s district office at 1308 13th Ave. in Dyker Heights for the next several months. It will then be shown in the lawmaker’s office on Capitol Hill. During her four years at Bishop Kearney, Guan was involved in a number of activities, according to school officials. In her senior year, she served as school president. She will be attending Boston College in the fall.
