Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 189th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1911, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “1,000 in a Panic as Steamer Hits Rock Off Coney.”

The article focused on a steamship that crashed just off Coney Island’s shore, causing the thousand passengers to scramble toward land.

“The boat struck some object in the channel — whether it was a rock or a log is not definitely known,” the Eagle reported. “The ship, crowded with passengers on their way from Yonkers or Manhattan to Coney Island or Rockaway Beach, rocked violently, as though some hidden craft under the water had come up and struck against the keel.”
