Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 244th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY 1927, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Cop Slays Bandit Who Turns Gun on Him After Holdup.”

The article focused on a cop who shot a 22-year-old man after he had stolen $4 from a taxi driver.

“The policeman, pistol drawn, went toward [the automobile in which the bandit was hiding]. He says Frederickson, who had been crouching in the backseat appeared at a window, leveling his pistol at the cop,” the Eagle reported. “[The officer] opened the door of the automobile and the bandit tumbled to the sidewalk.”

SHIRLEY BOOTH was born in Brooklyn on this day in 1898. The American actress won a Tony and an Oscar for her roles in the stage and film productions of “Come Back, Little Sheba,” but she is best known for her title role in the TV program “Hazel.” She died in 1992.

THE FIRST WHITE House presidential baby was born on this day in 1893. Frances Folsom Cleveland, wife of then-U.S. President Grover Cleveland, was the first presidential wife to have a baby at the White House when she gave birth to baby girl Esther.

MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT Shelley was born on this day in 1797. The English novelist was the daughter of philosopher William Godwin and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, and wife of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. In addition to being the author of the famous novel “Frankenstein,” Shelley is important in literary history for her work in the editing and publishing of her husband’s unpublished work after his early death. She died in 1851.
